Unapologetically Me

Autocorrect changed “unapologetically” to “apologetically” within the first minute of me writing this blog post. That’s pretty hilarious considering I’m talking about who I am and why I do care if you get a true authentic taste of who I am.

Aloha! I’m Courtney. I haven’t ever taken the time to properly sit down, write a blog, do a vlog or anything of any sort to introduce myself. I recently saw another doula re-introduce herself and it got me thinking that I have never shared who I am. I’ve shared what I do and why I love what I do, but I think everyone gets that now…..like, okay Courtney we get what you DOula but not who you are-uh….and there ya go, me being my silly self.

My keiki and I at the beach.

Let’s start from the beginning.

I was born in California. My father was in the Airforce so my sisters (I have two) and I were all born in the mainland. Both of my parents are locals to Oahu though, raised in Kaneohe. When my parents divorced my mother, sisters and I moved back to Kailua, which is where I’ve lived since I was 5.

I graduated from Chaminade University of Honolulu with a degree in Elementary Education. After five years of teaching I left so that I could pursue a career in fitness, more so, helping others reach health and fitness goals. That didn’t last either HA HA HA. I found my true love of birth work so here I am doula-ing it up. I will say though that being a teacher is in my blood, but instead of teaching kids I teach things within the birth realm.

I am 30 now.

I’ll also be weird with you. A photo of my best friend and I doing silly faces.

I’m a Gemini so I have two personalities. I’m an extroverted introvert. If you invite me to a place make sure you give me at least a weeks notice or more. Otherwise don’t expect me to show up. It does mean that if you’ve properly organized and invited me, I’ll likely be super social when you do see me. I smile and laugh a lot but I will totally cry with you!

I love hiking. I especially love hiking without my kids because it gives me ME-time. I’m actually very much about self care and me time. I don’t think it’s selfish for parents (more so sole caregivers) to get time to themselves. If I am not on a hike or working then I’m at the beach. I used to surf and I want to get back into it, but I haven’t found the time/space/energy.

I love zombies, zombie movies, horror movies and old things. I love artsy fartsy stuff! I love watching movies and eating popcorn. I also love food, yoga, laughing, making fart noises with my kids and riding bikes.

All of these fun and interesting facts about me also come with my own struggles. I struggle as a parent especially with my oldest. My oldest is an extrovert and it drains me. Hence my love of coffee and social media. I (We) stay just afloat financially in Hawaii like most of the families here. We live ohana-style with my mom. I struggle with my body image, although I’m getting better at just saying screw it.

I’m a normal person with good and bad. I share personal details because I accept where I am in life. I am not afraid to speak about uncomfortable topics (like pelvic floor issues). I am unafraid to make a fool of myself and therefore am not afraid to apologize when needed.

I used to say ‘I don’t care….’ but the thing is I DO CARE about [enter concept]. I do want you to know who I am, especially my clients, because I want to create a space where everyone can just BE. More so, be safe.

Because I care, I am unapologetically me.
